Cost of living in Singapore 2010

Just 5 mins back got a call from one of friend as my friend is moving to Singapore and had various questions regarding Cost of Living in Singapore. So thought of writing a note, about cost of Living Singapore 2010, which can help many other people who are planning to move to Singapore.

My experience of past few months in Singapore says If you want to come to Singapore its a great place to work because of its cosmopolitan culture/City that accommodate people from various ethnicity Chinese (around 72%),Malays (around 14%),Indians (around 9%) and rest 5% had people from Vientnam,Indonesia,Taiwaan etc.The one of interesting point is that Government of Singapore maintained this around whole Singapore even if you are going to book any apartment here around 72% are booked for Chinese people ,14% for Malays and 9% for Indians to avoid ghettoes of any particular ethnicity in ant district.(I wish we can adopt such type of approach in India to avoid any Hindu/Muslim/Sikh/Christen ghetto in particular part of India)

Singapore mainly entertains 3 industries Banking, Medical Services and Tourism. These are considered as high paying jobs here while Construction and Port Services provide employment to unskilled workers (Most of them are from Bangladesh)

Accommodation:
There are two types of accommodation in Singapore, HDB (Housing societies developed by Housing and Development Board, Singapore Government) and Condo (These are the Housing societies developed by Private Developers).Condos are considered lavish as these contains all sort of state of the art gymnasium, club houses, Spa, swimming pool etc. House Rent is the most costly factor in cost of living as It cost somewhere near to 1800-2000 SGD (for 2+1 HDB) and 3500-4000 SGD (for 3+1 Condo).2+1 are 2 BHK ,3+1 are 3 BHK.There are very few 1+1 available in Singapore. If anyone interested for 1+1 ,he/she can go for Studio apartment.

Its hard to get accommodation in Singapore through private contacts so need to go with brokers who charge half months of rent as brokerage and you need to pay one months rent as security deposit to Landlord and you need to pay rent at the starting of every month (so you will be paying rent always in advance.)

Transportation:
You are not suppose to have Car here as its very very costly to maintain car here until and unless you are working as associate Director or Director.
For transportation, Singapore rely on underground Metro,MRT (Mass Railway Transit) here that's very very very convenient and cheap (100 SGD Max for month),Its not crowdie like metro trains in India.MRT is the best and cheap part that I found in Singapore as it connects whole Singapore, It saves your transportation time as well as money. You can easily travel from one end of Singapore into other part of Singapore in around 50 Mins max. These MRTs are color coded so Singapore has Green Line, Red Line, Purple Line and Orange line,so once you got your office address you can check on MRT website that which line suits you best to search for accommodation.

Fooding:
If you are a bachelor there are lots of food courts available in Singapore which have all sorts of food starting from Indian, Malay, Chineese,Muslim food, Thai food.(One time meal cost around 8-10 SGD in food courts)However if you are purely vegetarian then its tough to find pure veg foods in food courts.if you are looking for purely veg restraints you can find them easily in large numbers in Little India.(One time vegetarian meal cost around 10-12 SGD in little India)
If you will cook food at home along with your family then your fooding (including monthly grossary)+Transportation should cost you around 1500-1600 SGD in a month.

So in 3800-4000 SGD you can spent life like gentlemen along with your wife, Cost of living differs from person to person.

Direct Tax Code : In view of common man

I seen lots of mail chain going here and there since DTC (Direct Tax Code 2010), is passed by parliament that is going to be implemented next year. Someone is happy, some are sad and some are confused. So I tried to see this whole episode of taxations as common man and what it has for me.

Why we got taxed:
The first question that came in my mind why we got taxed, answer was but obvious that to fund Nation and the needs of Nation .Whenever we talk of that we are going to connect all rivers internally to avoid flood and drought or we are going to set up nuclear reactors to feed up energy needs or to complete Golden quadrilateral, the question arises about fund for these schemes. Fund for all these schemes comes from tax levied on individuals, corporate and organization. However in this articles I am just concerned about my own pocket and want to see how its going to effect me.

What income come under tax bracket :
Government of India has the policy of taxing individual based on their investable income and they do not tax your money meant for minimum required savings (we can name 80C here) and household expenses (The exemption of 2 Lakh Rs that government gives us). However the line between saving and investment is very thin and sometime very confusing.

Difference between Investment and Saving:
Saving: Savings are money or other assets kept over a long period of time, usually in a bank Without any risk of loss or making profit.
Investment: Investments are the money or other assets that is purchased with the hope that it will generate income or appreciate in the future.

Now we starts with DTC provisions..

Tax Limits :

FOR INDIVIDUAL (MEN, WOMEN & HUF)
The big change is that the same tax slabs will apply to men and women. Now both are eligible for Rs 2 lakhs tax free exemption, whereas previously it used to be up to Rs 1.6 lakhs for men and Rs 1.9 lakhs for women.
DTC PARLIAMENTARY BILL (AUG 2010)
Up to Rs 2,00,000 - Nil; From Rs 2,00,001 to Rs 5,00,000 - 10%; From Rs 5,00,001 to Rs 10,00,000 - 20%; Above Rs 10,00,000 - 30%
CURRENT SLAB UNDER INCOME TAX ACT
Up to Rs 1,60,000 - Nil; From Rs 1,60,001 to Rs 5,00,000 - 10%; From Rs 5,00,001 to Rs 8,00,000 - 20%; Above Rs 8,00,000 - 30%
FOR SENIOR CITIZENS
For those above 65 years of age, the tax exemption limit has been raised to Rs 2.5 lakhs from Rs 2.4 lakhs, for a net new saving of Rs 1,000 per annum.
DTC PARLIAMENTARY BILL (AUG 2010)
Up to Rs 2,50,000 - Nil; From Rs 2,50,001 to Rs 5,00,000 - 10%; From Rs 5,00,001 to Rs 10,00,000 – 20%; Above Rs 10,00,000 – 30%
CURRENT SLAB UNDER INCOME TAX ACT
Up to Rs 2,40,000 – Nil; From Rs 2,40,001 to Rs 5,00,000 – 10%; From Rs 5,00,001 to Rs 8,00,000 – 20%; Above Rs 8,00,000 – 30%
So as a rough example if someone is earning 7 Lacs/Annum then he will be taxed at 4 lakh Rs at the rate of 10% (He can save 1 Lakh under 80C and there will be no tax on first 2 Lakh Rs.)

1.Here is the heart of Individual Taxation..The 80C:
The government was exempting all our savings (read it as money that can be saved from tax ) from tax till now under EEE umberella (EEE refers to the tax incidence - exempt at time of investment, exempt during accumulation and exempt at withdrawal.)Now take a look at below instruments that was available till now under various tax saving

NPS : Will available in DTC where you can save under 80C (The Maximum available limit for sum of money invested in all sorts of instrument is 1 Lakh). NPS (National Pension Scheme) is the most ambitious scheme of Indian government to bring every Indian under pension umbrella .The thing I hate most in this is EET model means your money will get taxed at withdrawal time and you will not be able to withdraw your money till 20 Years)

NSC: National Saving Certificates issued by post office will not be available in DTC

ELSS : Will not available in DTC.Many people know it as Tax Saving Mutual Funds. This was the smartest instruments under 80C till now where you could get handsome returns (first taste of equity market for a naive user) just in locking period of 3 years.Since it fetches returns from Equity Market Government branded it now as investment .This instrument will not be tax saving instrument under DTC

ULIPS: Will not available in DTC.I never liked this instrument of 80C as it linked money meant for insurance to equity market directly. So your insurance money is always prone to market fluctuations.

Term Insurance: Will be available under 80C. Its different than normal Life insurance schemes. Here you can get higher sum insured for small premium money but the thing is you will not be getting any money back as maturity. Its like Motor Insurance where you pay premium and will be getting money only when motor got an accident.

Bank FDs:
Will not available in DTC. Till now Bank FDs with minimum 5 Year lockin period was good tax saving instrument for people in their late 40s or in 50s.

PFs/PPFs :Will be available under 80C(Maximum limit – 1 Lakh).Maximum 70,000 can be saved yearly under this instrument

2. Tax Exemption one additional head (So forget about 80D and 80G) :
Here is the catch that non term life insurance policies has been moved from 80c to under new head. Now an additional deduction of 50,000 (apart from 1 Lakh in 80C) shall be allowed for payments made towards insurance premium, tuition fees and premium paid towards mediclaim.

So if you are paying insurance premium close to 50,000 you are not going to save much here .Frankly speaking it seems government move to push people from Non Term Life Insurance Policies to Term Life Insurance Policies.

Thus, the current deductions under Section 80D with respect to mediclaim premium up to `15,000 for self and an additional `15,000-`20,000 for dependent parents shall stand redundant once the new DTC comes into play with the maximum amount of deduction for mediclaim, insurance premium and tuition fees being restricted to `50,000 only.

3.Other instances and instrument where tax can be saved:
Other instruments on which you get tax rebate

Long Term Equity: The equities that you hold for more than 1 year will not be taxed. However in initial version DTC, government hinted about taxing Long term equities gains too at rate of 15%.The provision of tax exemption for long-term capital gains on listed equity (subject to STT) has been retained in substance, as the proposed DTC provides for a 100% deduction on listed equity shares or units of an equity-oriented fund where the period of holding is more than a year from the date of acquisition and on which STT has been paid.

Government gives tax exemption on this investment instrument because they do not want money of citizens laying idle in their bank account, rather they encourage people to put money in equity market for long term inturn helping economy to grow. I don’t think they will withdraw tax exemption on long term capital gain anytime because withdrawal of tax exemption on long term capital gain will woo away retail investors from equity market.

Dividend on Equities and Mutual Funds: This instrument will be taxed so if any income received as dividends from equity mutual funds and Ulips will be taxed at 5%.The reason for taxing this instrument (from market) could be that regular dividend may be considered as short term capital gain hence taxed.

House Rent: Available for tax exemption only if you do not own a house in same city where you are living. Earlier I have seen many of my colleagues living in their own apartment or house and still claming tax exemption under House Rent. Those days are going away soon 

Interest on Housing Loan: Available for tax deduction. An individual can claim deduction on interest paid up to Rs 1.5 lakh on a loan taken for acquisition , construction, repair or renovation of a house property in the financial year in which such property is acquired or constructed. This deduction would be allowed only if the house property is owned by the person and is not letout in the financial year.
New code has done away with the deduction on repayment of principal on such housing loan, which is currently admissible under Section 80C up to a maximum sum of `1 lakh.

Interest on Education Loan: Available for tax deduction. An individual can claim deduction for interest paid on loan taken for pursuing his higher education or higher education of his spouse, child or a student under his legal guardianship.

LTA : I am not sure about this instrument since DTC has not talked about this instrument at all. However as per Economic Times “A senior finance ministry official, who is involved with the framing of the DTC, clarified that the LTA will enjoy tax exemption and individual taxpayers would continue to enjoy the same benefits that are available at present — actual expenditure on account of the LTA will be exempted for two years in a block of four”

Your feedback and comments are welcome.

Shakespeare was wrong about names !!!!!!

The great english poet and play writer William Shakespeare seems wrong when he told "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet".

Name change emerged as trend of day whether it’s a extra K in name of some cinestar or changing name of Amethi to Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar or hell number of Gandhi named schemes (Yet I am great admirer of Rahul Gandhi because of his will to understand grass level truth about India before taking Reign), hearing news that Kerala is getting renamed as Keralam ,Madras got changed to Chennai , Bombay got changed to Mumbai,Kalicut became Kozhikode.I am just waiting cross fingered when Lucknow will be renamed as Nukhloow or Awadh .

Does our government is not having any other serious business to do other than changing names of established institutions???

What is the gain of aam aadmi in these name gimmicks???? People are still not getting medicines in government hospitals, people are still getting slaughtered in train and plain accidents, pregnant ladies in villages losing their life in way on bumpy roads before reaching to hospital, government teachers are busy in making strategies for promotions n Dharnas rather than concerning about single digit pass result, poor villagers are forced to pick guns against security forces instead of plugging their fields and common man is cursing government without trying to identify root of their plights.

Do we really have luxury of spending crores of Rupees on name change only so that we can butter some influential family or can target some particular caste vote???Should we not spend money first for basic amenities for every Indian???

The purpose of naming various social schemes, institutions, bridges, district and airports was , to keep reminds us about the local culture, local personalities and the eminent personalities in that field so that they can motivate coming generations but why we should change name of existing establishments whish cost in millions to Indian Tax payers.

Just do a google by ‘ number of rajiv gandhi scheme ‘ and you will get n number of schemes starting from RAJIV GANDHI UDYAMI MITRA YOJANA (I would have love it as Jamshed Ji Tata or Dhirubhai Ambani UDYAMI MITRA YOJANA) , Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (I would have love it as APJ Abdul Kalam or Aryabhata or Har Gobind Khorana Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya ) , Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (I would have as Vinoba Bhave Vidyutikaran Yojana) , RAJIV GANDHI SHILPI SWASTHYA BIMA YOJANA and there are thousands of others on same name pattern. It seems like whole India was developed by one family only and there is no other son of Land who worked for India.

Our next generation will come and ask , is there any other contributor in shaping Modern India other than Respected Gandhis and Baba Saheb Bhim Saheb Ambedekar .I understand and salute the contribution of Gandhis and Baba Sahebs but is it wise to suppress the contributions of other sons and daughters of India????

Do next generation will be able to know who was Chandra Shekar Ajad ,Bhagat Singh ,APJ Abdul Kalam,Vinoba Bhave , Dr. Jayant Narlikar , Jayaprakash Narayan,Lal Bahadur Shastri,Ballabh Bhai Patel ,Baba Amte, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda?? Should we not give some place to these personalities when naming new establishments????

If we want to preserve a healthy history for our next generation, respect for past generation and motivation for current generation we need to acknowledge contributions of various personalities from different work areas and different parts of India.

We should not change the name of existing establishments as it costs millions of rupees to Indian Tax payers and even if we need to name new establishments it should be named keeping note of local culture, local personalities and the eminent personalities.

Killings of Jawans by Naxals/Maoist, whose failure it is???

Today morning there was a small news in corner of page ‘Maoists kill 27 CRPF jawans in Chhattisgarh’.Many of us have seen it and thought 27 , some two months back it was 76 .For them Its just another number ,nothing else.

There was no murmur in public circles because for us its just the small number as we are very rich in number (120,0000000 of population) there was no murmur among leaders to go and at least console families of Saheed Jawans ,there were no murmur among human right activists that why 76 (in Daantewada),148 (In Gyaneshwari Express) and again 27 were butchered by Maoist and Naxaliest. (Our leaders and human right activist call them Nirdhan and Nireah villagers)

One day back two youths killed in Kashmir while they were vandalizing against the law and order ,whole valley has been jammed and there were protests across Kashmir Valley. The CM comes into picture and Said Sorry (I really appreciate his genuine apology to his state)

Does our slain soldiers not deserves same sort of support from public and leaders, to whom they were serving and protecting???????????

Our Soldiers were there in Chhattisgarh to restore peace, help and save poor people then why they have been killed brutally???????? Do they just join the forces to record in, numbers of soldiers killed in counter insurgency operations?

These killings are not just numbers, it’s the families who will never get chance to sit together and have meal happily ,It’s the children who will never get chance to wait for their father in evening ,its their widows who will never get chance to see their husbands again ,it’s the sisters who will wait for their brothers on every Rakhi, It’s the system that says we are biggest successful democracy (killing of people by people) in world , it’s the failure of our system which failed to solve a social issues (long term military solutions are not successful for social issues),Its failure of learning that we did not learnt from the massacre of 76 brave soldiers in Daantewada and it’s the failure of me, you and us that we do not want to think about the root cause and solution of these issues and problem.

I pray to God to give enough courage and patience to families who lost their loved ones, serving and protecting us and our motherland.

My Caste is Indian ....

Yesterday afternoon while going through the news, read the news Cabinet meets to seal fate of caste Census , I felt like something piercing through both my heart and mind. Why do we need to go through caste census? Do we want to continue as a developing nation where getting job is dependent on your caste rather than your skills, getting college admission based on your caste rather than your marks, voting based on caste (what if candidate is Criminal or Dacoit if he is from your own caste) rather than a neat clean imaged person or Social worker/professor from some other caste? I even heard about ragging in some colleges based on caste.

Purpose of Census is having a count of RESIDENTS of INDIA so that Government can make necessary arrangement for basic infrastructure (Roads/Dams/Hospitals/Schools/Railway Stations/Airports) and basic amenities (Drinking Water/Food/Education/House/Job/Social Security) for each Indian.

Does a person from Caste A need Drinking Water/Food/Education/House/Job/Social Security and at the same time person from caste B does not entitled for these amenities?????????????????????????

Why Drinking Water/Food/Education/House/Job/Social Security can not be make available to every INDIAN irrespective of their CASTE.

The open agenda of this Caste based census is to provide statistical data about caste in each and every region based on which our Netas can declare themself Crusader of that caste and lead naïve countrymen to Rasta Rocco Andolon and Bharat Band.

Netas will be using this data to provoke poor people and be talking/thinking about caste only and not for India because if every people will start thinking about India, Netas will not have lavish lifestyle and easy money. They need it to intice people against each other. They again want to invoke caste based rivalry that we had, until some years back in northern states like MP,UP and Bihar where lots of poor and innocent people lost their lives on the name of castism.

Have you ever noticed that Each and Every politician irrespective of their caste/region/party is Karorepati (It is based on property that they declared at the time election, forget about undeclared money,If you dont belive check their declaration of wealth at EC website ) . An annual performance annual report of Swiss Bank says Indian Accounts have total around 1500-1800 billion dollar. This fortune is more than the fortune submitted by rest all countries combined (including USA, China, Russia and EU families). but ohhh Global IT all the time they are talking about caste and region only, but caste prejudicing has been converted as Achilles’ heel of Economic/IT Giant India.

Caste Based census will serve only the thick skinned leaders who will continue filling their pockets by misleading poor people after calculating their Castethetic (Forget Mathematics in country of Aryabhat and Ramnujam,Here Mathematics means whether your count is equal to 2/3rd of total house or not (Offcourse to form Government so that PEOPLE OF INDIA[read it as friends and family], can be served)

In Court we have statue of GANDHARI having black strip on her eyes so that she can not see while doing justice so that Justice is fair to everyone. Then why we need caste census when as Developing nation we are striving to procure basic amenities (Drinking Water/Food/Education/House/Job/Social Security) to EACH and EVERY Indian.

Why we can not identify each Indian as Indian only or by Unique ID number that we will be getting in next 3-4 years? Why it is common with us that when we put one step forward (UID to each Indian, that will be his/her identity ) and then same time put another step backward by Census Caste (That will act as feeding data to our politician for being Caste Centric instead of being India Centric)

Why We can not make Skill and Ability the only criteria for Job/Admission/Nomination/Election/Promotion. We are living in a global village. We are a bulky country like Elephant but to sustain in this fast changing word we need to be agile like a Tiger. And my firm believe that the day we all run together (forgetting Caste/Region/Religion) along with skills and Ability only , nobody will be able to stop us from being a Developed Country

Apart from social perspective, even this whole system of caste is itself weak at foundation. Who decides the caste of one person and on what criteria? How to define the caste of a person who don’t have family? What is the caste of millions of children frolicking in child asylums? What is the caste of a person whose family has multiple roots?

And for Census’10 sake will anyone tell me what is the caste/religion of our respectable Rahul Gandhi, whose mother is Christian, father is Hindu and grand father is muslim?
